The station first began daily broadcasts on the 6th of March 1982, after a sign-on broadcast on the 19th of February. It is affiliated with National Public Radio (NPR), Public Radio International (PRI), and American Public Media (APM).

The station actually provides essential information services such as the Emergency Alert System, AMBER announcements, and severe weather warnings, as well as local, regional, state, national, and international news and entertainment programming to a combined listening population of more than eleven thousand people. It also airs a variety of American Public Media and Public Radio International programming, as well as its own variety of locally produced shows. This radio station is a committed member of CoastAlaska Inc., a consortium of five Southeast community radio organizations cooperating to improve service to Alaskans while decreasing costs.
