AKTINA FM is the only Greek-American radio station streaming online in a bilingual format, and it is the first and only Greek-American radio station in the U.S. to have a street named after it. Its mission is dedicated to the promotion and preservation of all aspects of the rich heritage and culture of Cyprus and Greece for the benefit of Greek and Greek Cypriot Americans of all generations and ages and of the public of all ages. The station is also bilingual, broadcasting in both Greek and English. It is the second online radio station to emerge in the world and was founded on May 3, 1993, in New York City by Elena Maroulleti, an independent journalist/reporter who is also the executive producer and host. The station's programming includes news, special reports, Greek sports, and a variety of music genres, including traditional Greek music, rebetiko, laiko, and contemporary Greek pop. AKTINA FM also focuses on the promotion and preservation of the Hellenic identity, culture, and folklore in America, including matters that relate to the Greek and Greek Cypriot American communities, the national issues of Greece and Cyprus, and topics of wide public interest pertaining to life in America, such as social issues, education, health, good community relations, politics, and quality of life among others. The station is a valuable resource for Greek-Americans and anyone else who is interested in learning more about Greek culture.
