The station is owned by SummitMedia alongside six other stations, all of which share studios in the Cahaba neighborhood in far southeastern Birmingham. In addition to its extensive country music, WZZK-FM also features special programming throughout the week.

It was the first FM station in Birmingham to switch to country music, and throughout much of the 1980s and 1990s, it was the top-rated radio station in Birmingham. The station started in 1948 as a sister station to WJLD/1400 AM, playing a rhythm and blues music format.
